A Proud History of Diversity at Delaware State University

Delaware State University (DSU) is proud to call itself one of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Founded in 1891, DSU was one of the first land-grant educational institutions in America. DSU’s long history is a testament to its commitment to diversity and inclusion, with our current population consisting of students from many different backgrounds. Let’s take a closer look at how this rich tradition has helped shape our university today.

A Commitment to Inclusion

DSU has always been committed to providing an inclusive environment where students from all walks of life can learn and grow together. As one of the nation's first land-grant educational institutions, DSU was founded in 1891 as the State College for Colored Students. Since then, DSU has remained dedicated to creating an environment where students from diverse backgrounds are welcomed and supported.

Today, DSU is proud to have a 62% African-American enrollment along with an increasing number of Caucasian, Hispanic, Asian and international students that make up our student body. This diverse population allows us to foster a culture of respect, understanding and collaboration among our campus community. Our commitment to inclusion ensures that all members feel respected and valued no matter their background or identity.

The Benefits of Diversity

At DSU, we understand that diversity is a strength rather than a weakness. We believe that having students from many different backgrounds brings unique perspectives into the classroom which helps create an engaging learning experience for everyone involved. In addition, having such a diverse student body helps drive innovation as it encourages creative problem solving through collaboration between people with varying ideas and experiences.

Delaware State University is proud to be part of America's rich tradition of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs). We remain dedicated to creating an inclusive learning environment where students from all walks of life can come together as one unified community. Our commitment to diversity not only makes us stronger but also provides us with unique opportunities for growth and development that would not be possible without such an incredibly diverse student body. We are proud of our university's long history as well as our bright future ahead!
