Helping Rural America Thrive Through Affordable Home Ownership
Since 1971, the Housing Assistance Council (HAC) has been helping local organizations build affordable homes in rural America. HAC assists in the development of both single- and multi-family homes and promotes homeownership for working low-income rural families through a self-help, "sweat equity" construction method that emphasizes local solutions, empowerment of people in poverty, reduced dependence, and self-help strategies. HAC serves public, nonprofit, and private organizations throughout the rural United States with a special focus on high-need groups and regions such as Indian country, the Mississippi Delta, farmworkers, the Southwest border colonies, and Appalachia. In this blog post, we'll explore why HAC's work is so important to these communities as well as how you can help.
The Benefits of Affordable Homeownership for Rural Areas
Homeownership is an important part of fostering strong communities—it allows people to gain financial stability by having a place to call their own and build equity over time. It also boosts economic activity by creating jobs during the building process and bringing more money into the community through taxes that are generated from property values increasing. However, for many living in rural areas across the US—especially those living in persistent poverty—the dream of owning a home seems out of reach due to limited incomes or lack of resources or access to credit. This is where HAC comes in; they work with local partners to provide housing assistance services such as access to capital financing programs, technical assistance on designing energy efficient homes that are built with quality materials, and training on how to become effective developers and managers of affordable housing projects. Additionally, they offer resources on how to identify sources of funding that could be used for projects like these which further helps spread their mission across the country.
How You Can Help
As a community leader or entrepreneur looking for ways to give back locally or nationally there are several ways you can help support HAC’s mission: Donating your time – Volunteering at an event or project hosted by HAC is one way you can assist with their work in providing affordable housing options for rural Americans. Donating funds – Making a tax-deductible donation directly to HAC will help them continue their efforts towards building successful communities throughout rural American areas. Partnering with other organizations – You can also collaborate with other organizations like Habitat For Humanity or Rebuilding Together who have similar missions around providing accessible housing options for low-income families and ensure all members of our society have access to safe shelter no matter what area they live in!
